Grade I listed Charterhouse began life in the 14th century as a Carthusian Priory, 1 of only 9 ever built in the country. However, following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 the building passed into private ownership. Charterhouse changed hands many times over the following centuries, owners including Robert Dudley and later the Whittingham family. The house’s last private owner, Colonel William Fitzthomas Wyley passed away in 1940, bequeathing Charterhouse to the people of Coventry. It was then used for a number of purposes by Coventry City Council until 2010 when it was decided to sell on the open market. After protestations by the local community, Charterhouse Coventry Preservation Trust was formed and ownership was transferred. In 2015, The Charterhouse Coventry Preservation Trust became Historic Coventry Trust, and plans were drawn up to transform the building into an amazing heritage destination for Coventry.
Following extensive restoration works, Charterhouse will be opening in the Spring as the city’s newest visitor attraction and we are looking for an experienced, dynamic part time Visitor Experience Manager to join our team.
The role will be key in delivering a first-class visitor experience and managing an enthusiastic team of volunteers. It will also play an important part in developing a solid and sustainable offer for the success of Charterhouse as a ‘must see/must be part of’ attraction in the city.
