London Road Cemetery is an early example of the 19th century ‘garden cemetery’ movement, developed not only as a burial site but also as place of natural beauty for the people of Coventry to enjoy.
Appointed in 1845, Paxton incorporated the hilly layout of the former quarry the site sits on into his design and brought in a range of exotic and native trees – which is why we also call the cemetery Paxton’s Arboretum.

The Tree resources support the National Curriculum at key stage 2 in the following areas:
- Working scientifically
- Art
- English
- Maths
Route & Activities
The tree trail takes up to 1 hour to complete, including activities along the way.
There is a suggested route but you can select particular trees or activities to focus on if preferred. They can be done in any order. It is recommended to split into groups of up to 15 children with an adult.
Workshop
The Trees workshop is designed for students working at key stage 2 – three activities using science and art skills:
- Leaf identification
- Leaf printing
- Nature paint brushes
- Trees workshop
Group hire
Hire the Anglican Chapel as a base for your group visit. The Chapel is equipped with tables and chairs and there are toilets and a kitchenette.
