This highly immersive and atmospheric production of A Christmas Carol captures the joy, humour and darkness of this traditional piece. A true festive classic, told as Dickens did to friends and family at Christmas time – even in Coventry – this one-man candlelit performance is not to be missed.

And, here a story of connections: when Charles Dickens performed the tale in Coventry it was at the request of his friend Joseph Paxton, designer of London Road Cemetery; Dickens performed in the Corn Exchange, designed by architect James Murray who is buried in London  Road Cemetery; Dickens said that he based a scene in ‘The Old Curiosity Shop, on Whitefriars Gatehouse, seen from a stage coach passing into Coventry.

Behind the Door Productions

Toby Burchell formed Behind the Door Productions in 2024.

Toby began his acting career with the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain working both as an actor and facilitator. He has since gone on to work extensively with Malvern Theatres Stage Company as an actor and director.

Toby has also worked on national and international tours including touring Austria, Germany and Italy with Vienna’s English Theatre.

Behind the Door’s mission is to create high quality and challenging productions which seek to question the audience. We have a dedication to artistic excellence and aim to create productions that are more than just entertainment but that provoke thought, stimulate conversation and question an audience’s point of view.

Since Behind the Door Productions formed they have toured two of M. R. James’ most popular ghost stories to theatres and historic houses. Behind the Door now hopes to build on the success of their first tour creating further productions which are both atmospheric and immersive in theatres as well as site specific venues.

Toby currently works as Front of House Manager at Malvern Theatres.

How to get to the Chapel

By foot
You can find us on foot less than one mile from the city centre or the train station.

By train
We’re just under 20 minutes walk or a short taxi ride from Coventry train station.

By bus
You can jump on the X18 (Stagecoach bus) to Stratford from Stop TS2 near Sainsbury’s in Coventry city centre, arriving on London Road in just 10 minutes. The X18 runs every 30 minutes.
