Cook Street Gate is one of the two remaining medieval city gates, built around 1385. It has now been converted into luxury holiday accommodation, and provides a unique place to stay in the heart of Coventry.

Cook Street Gate is a studio-apartment within the original gatehouse – a historic building with modern luxury.

Original features such as the unique historic stonework are combined with modern luxury (and a new flight of steps to access the property!) to ensure a really comfortable stay. A luxurious bed and plenty of hot water in a modern shower, along with all you need in the kitchen and living areas are available right in the heart of the city. With views over Lady Herbert’s Garden, Cook Street Gate is an oasis in this historic city.

As you walk in, there is a modern kitchenette, with Corian grey quartz worktop, fridge with icebox, integrated microwave, and quality cooking equipment.

The large bedroom area has a modern comfy bed, with flat-screen HD TV windows with a view over to Lady Herbert’s Garden.

A bathroom area contains all you need for a stay, with a luxury shower.

Cook Street Gate is an historic building (dating to the 15th century). There is a modern external staircase to provide access, which has a secure gate at the ground-floor, and a sturdy handrail. Given the staircase (although modern), we would not recommend the property to those with mobility issues, or to those with babies, toddlers, or older infants.

Cook Street Gate has the following stepped access:

  • Path (resin bonded gravel) path at foot of Cook Street Gate to…
  • Three steps to secure metal external gate
  • Two flights of modern steps, with sturdy metal handrail to front door. 12 steps plus 11 steps (23 steps total)


Dogs are not allowed in Cook Street Gate.

However, well behaved dogs are welcome in 3, 4 or 5 Priory Row and Swanswell Gate.


Cook Street Gate was one of 12 original medieval city wall gates, and is one of only two remaining (the other being Swanswell Gate). The building was completed around 1385.
